Welcome to the first installment of my new series: the East Bay Plant Crawl. I’ll be making my way through local nurseries, garden shops, and hidden green gems across the Bay Area, searching for the best plants, the best prices, and the most inspiring spaces. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a casual houseplant lover, these posts are meant to help you discover your next favorite plant shop—and maybe save a little cash while you’re at it.
This week, I visited two of the most stylish and well-stocked destinations in the East Bay: 🌴 Paraíso Plant Studio in Berkeley and 🌺 Crimson Horticultural Rarities on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland. Both shops offer a wide selection of plants, pots, and plant care accessories, and both are a joy to visit—though they cater to slightly different styles and budgets.
🌴 Paraíso Plant Studio: Pet-Friendly Paradise

Located on bustling 4th Street in Berkeley, Paraíso Plant Studio feels like stepping into a peaceful, design-savvy greenhouse. The selection is generous, with plenty of vibrant, healthy plants for both novice and experienced indoor gardeners. Prices for more common varieties are very reasonable, and the staff were friendly and helpful—available to answer questions but never overbearing.
One standout feature is the upstairs loft, which is entirely dedicated to pet-friendly houseplants. As a dog owner, I really appreciated the extra thought that went into curating a space for those of us who want to keep our homes safe for our furry companions without sacrificing style.
The shop also carries a wide variety of attractive pots, tools, and other accessories. The overall aesthetic is minimal, fresh, and intentional—perfect for someone looking to bring home a plant that feels as much like a piece of decor as it does a living thing.

🌺 Crimson Horticultural Rarities: Elevated & Eclectic

A short drive south on Piedmont Avenue, Crimson Horticultural Rarities offers a different kind of experience—still curated, still beautiful, but with a moodier, more eclectic vibe. The space is packed with striking, sculptural plants and hard-to-find species that will thrill collectors and houseplant nerds alike.
While prices for everyday plants are comparable to Paraíso, Crimson really shines when it comes to rarities—and those don’t come cheap. Bargain hunters may need to show restraint, but the inspiration factor alone makes it well worth a visit. Like Paraíso, Crimson also stocks a thoughtful collection of ceramics, watering cans, books, and tools—many of them from small makers or independent brands.
This is the kind of shop that rewards a slow walk-through. You’ll want to take your time admiring the displays, chatting with the knowledgeable staff, and possibly falling in love with a plant you didn’t know you needed.

🧭 Final Thoughts
Both Paraíso and Crimson are strong starts to this plant crawl journey. They’re not just retail spaces—they’re experiences. Paraíso shines for its airy layout, pet-friendly options, and affordability, while Crimson offers a treasure trove of rare finds and high-style presentation. Whether you’re on a budget or looking to splurge, both offer plenty of beauty, inspiration, and botanical joy.
